Edgar John LOCKWOOD was born in Fordham on 10th July 1888 (Newmarket Q3-1888 3B:512) son of Frederick and Margaret LOCKWOOD(née JEFFEREY ?).
There is a discrepancy between his given birth year and the registration of birth. He told the Canadian Army it was 1889.
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Biggen Farm, Newmarket Road, Fordham with his father Frederick LOCKWOOD [39] farm labourer born Elden, Norfolk ? (probably Elveden); his mother Margaret [39]; sister Ida [6] and brothers Charles [5] and Percy [4 months). All except his father were born in Fordham. 1901 census...Aged 12 he was at Carter Street, Fordham with his parents (father now recorded as born in Barnham, Suffolk), brothers George [18] (nursery gardener born Fordham), Charles (houseboy) and Percy. 1911 census... He has not been found in the census, perhaps already in Canada. His parents ( father a horsekeeper) and brothers Charles (motor washer) and Percy ( horseman) were still at Carter Street, Fordham. His next of kin is recorded as mother Rittie and living with him in Canada as on his Canadian attestation papers. She is later also referred to as Margaret. By the time of his death his father was at Stuntney c/o G. Lockwood according to CWGC. |

Canadian Archives have RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 5707 - 33,Item Number:535064 He enlisted in Winnipeg on 11th February 1916, giving his date of birth as 10th July 1889, in Fordham, England, single, a barber by profession. Living at 213 Alexander Avenue, Winnipeg with his next of kin, his mother Margaret (known as Rittie) He was 5 feet 4 inches (162.6 cm) tall, chest 36" to 40" (91.4 to 101.6 cm), weighing 145 lbs (66 kg) grey eyes and dark hair, Church of England. He arrived in Liverpool on the SS "Saxonia" on 3rd October 1916, proceeding via Wisley to Dibgate where he remained under training in the 14th Res Battalion, going to France and the 16th Battalion on 26th April 1917. He changed his will on 16th April 1917, leaving his estate to a friend, Miss G. Johnson of Carter Street, Fordham Unfortunately he has no circumstances of death card available. The Battalion war diary for the 28th states:- "Weather fine until evening, then heavy thunderstorm.Barrage started at 7:10 pm for attack on right and left. No work parties. The enemy did not retaliate in any strength on our front. We had strong patrols out all night. Casualties, 2 wounded. The battalion had just relieved the 7th Canadian battalion in the Rhine and Elbe trenches and were around Branden Trench. (somewhere just south of Vimy Ridge) Edgar was one of only two deaths in the 16th Battalion for 28th on CWGC. |
